South Korea Reaffirms Commitment to Peace, Rules Out Unification by Absorption or Hostile Acts Toward North

Seoul: South Korea will not seek unification through absorption or take any hostile actions against North Korea, Vice Unification Minister Kim Nam-jung said on Monday, reiterating the Lee Jae Myung government’s commitment to building lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Speaking at a meeting with residents of border areas at Camp Greaves — a former US military base turned educational site in the western border city of Paju, near the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) — Kim emphasized that Seoul’s approach prioritizes mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

“To achieve a peaceful Korean Peninsula without conflict, our government will recognise and respect North Korea’s system,” Kim said, underscoring that the administration remains focused on dialogue and stability rather than confrontation.

The reaffirmation comes amid ongoing regional tensions, with Seoul seeking to maintain a balanced and pragmatic policy toward Pyongyang while reinforcing its broader vision of peace and cooperation in Northeast Asia.
