Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is investigating multi-crore financial irregularities at Kolkata’s state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, has initiated the process to record the statement of former principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh. Ghosh, who has been at the centre of controversy, is currently in judicial custody in connection with the case.
The ED has approached a special court in Kolkata seeking permission to question Ghosh inside the correctional home under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The provision empowers the agency to summon individuals, collect documents, administer oaths, and record evidence—making the process judicial in nature and enforceable by law.
According to sources, the ED will present details related to Ghosh’s statement before the court on December 14. The financial probe is part of a broader investigation that intensified following a shocking incident on August 9 last year, when the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was found inside the hospital’s seminar hall.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage, triggering prolonged protests by doctors, civil society groups, and women’s organisations, demanding accountability and deeper scrutiny of the hospital’s functioning.
