THRISSUR: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday dismissed allegations that the state police were deliberately delaying action against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who faces a rape charge. His remarks came shortly after the Kerala High Court granted the Congress legislator protection from arrest till December 15.
Addressing reporters, the Chief Minister said the interim stay on the MLA’s arrest was a “natural judicial step” and should not be interpreted as government interference. He maintained that the police had not attempted to shield the accused at any stage.
“There is no directive or condition that prevents the police from proceeding. The accusation that they are intentionally holding back is baseless,” Vijayan said, emphasising that the High Court’s order formed part of the regular legal process.
Rahul Mamkootathil, who remains absconding, continues to be under scrutiny, even as the state government insists that due procedure is being followed without bias or delay.
