Chandigarh: The Panjab University Bachao Morcha has announced a statewide gherao of BJP offices in Punjab and Chandigarh on December 3 as part of its intensified protest against the Centre’s actions concerning the university’s governance structure.
The agitation on campus has continued for 25 days, with students demanding immediate senate elections and the restoration of the syndicate. Although the Centre had earlier issued a notification dissolving both bodies, the move was withdrawn following strong objections from student groups and political parties. However, no new schedule has been announced for the senate elections, leading to further unrest.
The Morcha has also urged farmer unions, social organisations and political groups to join the December 3 protest. Academic activities at the university remained suspended today after students called for a strike in support of their demands.
While Punjab BJP leaders have assured that the notification for fresh senate elections will be released soon, the Centre has yet to take an official decision, prompting students to escalate their agitation.
