SC Seeks Centre’s Detailed Reply on Pleas Challenging Online Gaming Act, 2025

New Delhi, (IANS) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Union government to submit a comprehensive affidavit responding to multiple petitions questioning the constitutional validity of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025.

The legislation, which enforces a blanket ban on “online money games” and places restrictions on banking, advertising, and related services, has faced strong resistance from the online gaming industry. Several gaming companies have argued that the law unfairly disrupts legitimate business operations and innovation in the digital gaming space.

A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan heard the matter, where counsel for the petitioners informed the court that their platforms had been non-operational for more than a month due to the Act’s stringent provisions.

Taking note of the submissions, the bench sought the Centre’s comprehensive response, indicating that the matter will be heard further after the affidavit is filed. The case is expected to have significant implications for the rapidly growing online gaming industry in India.
