Punjab Women’s Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill Visits Amritsar Jail, Reviews Facilities for Women Inmates

Amritsar, (IANS) — Punjab State Women’s Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill on Monday visited Amritsar Jail to review the condition of women prisoners and interact with them about their issues and welfare. During her visit, she observed that the jail authorities were providing basic amenities such as food, healthcare, and legal aid, while assuring inmates that they could reach out to the Commission for any future grievances.

Gill noted that most women inmates were charged under the NDPS Act, while others faced cases related to cheating and domestic violence. Acknowledging the strict nature of the NDPS Act, she said that legal assistance was being extended to ensure speedy hearings. She also inspected healthcare facilities, mentioning that gynecologists visit twice a week and pregnant women are referred to hospitals for deliveries, with special arrangements made for newborns.

The Chairperson expressed concern over elderly inmates above 85 years of age and urged police officials to consider humanitarian aspects during investigations. She also directed jail authorities to help foreign women prisoners facing communication barriers with their embassies. Reaffirming the government’s zero-tolerance policy on drugs, Gill emphasized that the law applies equally to locals and foreigners and shared her personal contact with inmates for direct access to the Commission.
