President Murmu Hails India’s Historic Women’s World Cup Victory as a ‘Watershed Moment’

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday hailed India’s maiden triumph at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 as a “watershed moment” for Indian sports. Congratulating the team for their historic victory, she said the achievement reflected the players’ immense talent and determination. “My heartiest congratulations to every member of the Indian women’s cricket team on winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025! They have created history by winning it for the first time. This watershed moment will elevate women’s cricket to even greater heights,” President Murmu posted on X.

India clinched their first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup title at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, defeating South Africa by 52 runs before a packed crowd. All-rounder Deepti Sharma led the charge with a stellar 58 and an exceptional spell of 5/39, guiding India to a commanding 298/7 before the bowlers sealed a memorable win.

With this triumph, India became only the third nation after England and Australia to win both the men’s and women’s ODI World Cups. The victory was particularly remarkable as the team had battled early setbacks, scraping into the semifinals before stunning Australia and overpowering South Africa. The triumph has ignited new hope for women’s cricket in India.
